How to get your child ready for a ski trip

We know skiing is not on everyone’s mind in August, but there are no rules when it comes to a well-deserved snowy vacation. Whether you’ve been skiing for a long time, or you just want to start, going skiing in the summer is the perfect activity for those who can’t wait for winter.

But if you plan a skiing trip with your family, you have to make sure your little ones are well prepared for it. In this article, we have some tips for how to keep your kids safe and warm during a ski trip, especially if you are drastically changing the climate. Read along and get ready for a fun and stress-free ski trip.

Safety first

Safety first is the most important rule when going on a family ski trip. Before hitting the slopes, make sure your kids have all the necessary safety gear. This includes helmets, goggles, and well-fitted gloves. Make sure their equipment is in good condition and appropriate for their skill level, as this could be very dangerous when it comes to skiing.

You also want to regularly check their bindings and skis to prevent any unexpected accidents. Your children should know the rules of the slopes, so make sure you emphasize the importance of staying within designated areas and being aware of their surroundings. For emergencies, set up a meeting point in case anyone gets separated from the group.

Keep them warm

After safety, keeping your little ones warm is the next important thing for an enjoyable ski experience. Dress them in layers, starting with moisture-wicking base layers, followed by insulating layers, and finishing with waterproof and windproof outer layers. Merino wool is an excellent moisture-wicking material, so take a look at some merino wool clothes for your kids.

Also, ensure they have warm, waterproof boots and thick socks to keep their feet warm and dry. Don’t forget a good-quality, thermal jacket and pants to protect against the cold and wind. Provide them with hats and neck gaiters to shield their faces from the biting winter chill. Remember, the key to warmth is layering, so they can easily adjust their clothing based on the changing weather conditions.

Get the lessons

If your kids are beginners, don’t skip the ski lessons! Having professionals teach them the fundamentals of skiing, including proper techniques, balance, and how to navigate the slopes safely will make sure they are well prepared. Many ski resorts offer lessons tailored to different age groups and skill levels, providing a supportive and fun learning environment.

Additionally, group lessons can be a great way for your children to make some new friends and get exposed to people their age. If your kids have some skiing experience, a refresher course can still help bring back their skills and boost their confidence in the snow.
