Encouraging your child to pursue a hobby is important for their overall development for many reasons. They will expand upon a range of fantastic transferrable skills and build relationships with likeminded people. The good news is, there are countless different types of hobbies for children to choose from, so don’t give up hope if your child doesn’t seem interested in sport or music.

Here are six unique hobbies you could consider for your child, suggested by an independent boarding college in Berkshire.
1. Animal Care
If your child is an animal lover, why not encourage them to pursue animal care as a hobby. They could volunteer at a local shelter or help a friend or neighbour to walk their dog. This might even lead to a career in animal care but will also promote compassion.
2. Martial Arts
Martial arts is a sport, but slightly different to the traditional options that children normally pursue, like football or netball. It’s a chance for youngsters to learn about teamwork, develop their communication skills, and engage in some much-needed physical activity that will benefit their overall health. It’s one of the best alternative hobbies for children they could try.
3. Gardening
Lots of kids love getting their hands dirty, but gardening is more than that. It’s a very mindful activity so is a chance for children to feel calm, spend time outdoors and explore nature in a hands-on environment.
4. Photography
Most children own some form of gadget with a camera nowadays, so why not encourage them to use that gadget in a productive way. Photography is great for helping children look at the world in a beautiful light and, again, it can lead to a fantastic career in the future.
5. Scrapbooking
Creative pursuits are great for children because they allow them to express themselves in a manner that is free from rules or structure. Scrapbooking is one of those hobbies for children that also inspires a sense of pride and allows them to walk down memory lane from time to time so that they can see how far they’ve come.
6. Collecting
Collecting is a unique and rewarding hobby for children, as it not only teaches them about the objects they collect but also helps them develop organisational and decision-making skills. Collecting can be tailored to your child’s interests, whether it’s stamps, coins, toys, comic books and graphic novels, or something else entirely. This hobby can also be a great way for children to bond with family members or friends who share their passion for a particular object.
