As a parent, you’re already adept at the challenges that come with kids. But have you thought about actually working with children too?
This is a collaborative post
If you’re looking for a change of career, you’ll already have skills ideal for working with children and young people at vital stages of their lives.
If you dream of working with children but can’t decide which path is right for you, these are just five fantastic options to consider.
Different ways of working with children
1. Teaching
It might be the most obvious, but teaching is one of the most rewarding careers for working with children.
And if you’re a naturally nurturing individual with a gift for pedagogy, teaching will give you the chance to support young people in their education.
Alternatively, if the time commitment of lesson planning and marking doesn’t appeal for you, teaching assistant and supply teacher roles give you the chance to make an impact in the classroom with greater flexibility. Teaching Personnel is a fantastic agency which matches teaching support staff to schools across the country.
2. Tutoring
Tutoring differs vastly to traditional teaching as it offers greater flexibility. It is ideal for those looking for part time work and the chance to set their own hours but at the same time working with children.
As an independent tutor, you can offer your services through an agency or advertise independently on your own website, using GDPR consultancy training and created with a web designer such as Maratopia Digital Marketing.
You may be able to offer academic online tutoring to support children with their school studies. Or if your skills lie elsewhere, you may be able to provide teaching in extra-curricular activities, such as music or additional languages.
3. Childminding

If you’re used to running round after your own kids, what’s a couple more, right?
Childminding doesn’t require any specialist qualifications or training, although you will have to register with the appropriate authorities. And if you’re already accustomed to tending the needs of kids, the challenges – and rewards – of this profession will come naturally to you. Or if you wanted to do more training you could undertake a Childcare Apprenticeships course.
4. Play therapist
Working with an increasingly popular mode of therapy, play therapists support children’s mental health through difficult times in their lives.
For a career in this field, you’ll need a postgraduate qualification certified by the British Association of Play Therapists (BAPT) or Play Therapy UK (PTUK). But with intensive studying will come great rewards. As you build a career that can make a real difference to the emotional wellbeing of vulnerable youngsters.
5. Children’s entertainer
If you’ve got what it takes to put smiles on children’s faces, a job as an entertainer might be perfect for you.
Perhaps you’re a talented performer, amateur magician or skilled face painter. As a kid’s entertainer for parties, you could also offer your services as a Disney character for hire.
If you like the idea of working with children, any of these five careers might just be your dream job!
