Through reading, writing and listening, we all develop language. All of this is to help us learn to communicate between each other in effective ways, while also picking up on our language skills. It’s the bread and butter of every child’s education, which is why it’s so important to explore with your child from a young age.
This is a collaborative post
To help children work on their reading skills, here are some reasons why it’s vital your child is picking up a book on a regular basis.
It’s going to help your child throughout their studies
If your child struggles to pick up what is being asked of them, you’ll see that it’s down to their reading knowledge and how that will build their skills. Your child is going to need to read a lot of things in order to complete tasks, be able to understand what is being asked of them, and how each word will mean something different.
If this isn’t addressed early on in life, your child will fall very quickly behind the other students in their class, which can be a huge concern. This day nursery in Cheltenham will offer children the chance to explore new ways to enjoy reading, much like what should be done at home to keep your child on the right track.
Reading helps children learn to write
Upon being about to read and understand the words in front of them, your child will also be expected to write things down and reflect on them. Often these writing exercises at a young age will be used to share their thoughts and feelings with the classroom. This will give your child a lot more confidence in their literacy, as well as helping them to navigate two of the core building blocks they will need to advance through school life.
Reading will give your child the chance to explore a new passion
With so many books out there to explore, there’s a world waiting for them in the world of reading. Let your child pick out lots of different stories and see which ones they take a shine to. It will let your child discover what it means to really enjoy reading and how that’s going to impact them in their future English lessons.
There’s thankfully plenty of genres for your child to get lost in – from the world of fantasy to the more elaborate stories, or visual novels and picture books. Let them find what makes them feel happy and how they form that strong relationship with reading.
Reading will improve your child’s understanding of empathy and emotion
Your child, through reading, is going to be exploring a lot of issues. It’s going to show your child what the world can be like, and what lessons they can take away from these books. With all of that in mind, your child is able to form strong emotions and connections with these characters. It can ultimately shape how your child reacts to certain situations and build up a level of empathy with people they know in the real world – key things that will give your child that chance to broaden their horizons.
Many characters in stories go through pain, struggles, loss and so much more, which can help your child learn to overcome them if they relate in some way. It’s a great way to build on their skills as readers and writers, but also as communicators, problem solvers and support for others.
Be sure to explore reading with your child from the moment they’re able to sit and listen. Picking up new words and phrases, building emotion and becoming more resilient all come from the benefits of reading on a regular basis, which will give your child a lot more support in their studies.
