Choosing a family holiday should be simple enough, right?
But in reality, finding a location that suits everyone is a hassle at best, and at worst, a chore that can sap all the fun out of searching for your dream destination.
This is a collaborative post
You want somewhere that isn’t too expensive, but worth visiting. Somewhere with plenty of child-friendly attractions, but a grown-up appeal too. A holiday location that hits the sweet spot of being sophisticated without being totally stuffy, engaging for all ages and most importantly, somewhere you can make family memories together.
With that in mind, these three travel destinations provide the perfect location for family holidays, but might have slipped under your radar in your search for the perfect globetrotting adventure – take a look.
3 underrated family holiday ideas
1. Portugal
This sunny European hotspot is missed out by many travellers, but for families seeking the perfect getaway, it really does have something for everyone.
As well as stunning beaches, beautiful blue seas and the trademark limestone cliffs that add a certain je ne sais quoi to its breath-taking views, it’s also home to bustling cities with great shopping locations, plus a host of historic sites for an educative visit.
Portugal really does have a bit of everything. It’s no surprise then that as well as being a popular family holiday destination, it’s also increasingly becoming a popular place to raise children. As well as having one of the top-rated healthcare systems in the world and a widely-respected public education system – plus, you can check out properties for sale in Portugal by propertylisbon.com and see why its booming property market attracts so many international investors.
For an unforgettable family adventure, you can’t go far wrong with Portugal.
2. South Africa
There are few more breath-taking trips imaginable than a visit to the safari park.
This is a trip that will capture imaginations at any age. South Africa has a number of safari experiences perfect for young children. Amongst them, Addo National Park is home to over 600 elephants, plus a host of other remarkable species including lions, black rhinos and antelopes. Visitors can enjoy a luxury guided tour of the park and stunning views of nature, flora and fauna.
3. Wales
For some, Wales may already be a family favourite holiday destination. For others, it may lack the exotic appeal of other locations on this list.
Nevertheless, from the lively city of Cardiff to the quiet towns of Pembrokeshire and Llandudno, this stunning country is highly underrated. Especially for families travelling on a budget.
While we can’t guarantee the weather, Wales’s coastal beaches offer a sight to behold. And for families visiting with children, castles such as Caernarfon, Conwy and Cardiff are perfecting visiting spots for a day out. And if you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know how much we love Bluestone in Pembrokeshire.
These are just three fantastic locations around the world fantastic for families travelling with children of all ages.

How did I do?
Did you enjoy this post? You might want to read a few of my travel reviews. How about one on Rockley Park caravan park in Dorset or staying in a New York loft apartment-style caravan at the New Forest’s Sandy Balls. Or something completely different with a farm stay experience at Trecan Farm Cottages or Tredethick Farm Cottages, both in Cornwall. And when you’re about to head off on your hols, use my packing list for babies and toddlers. Then have a giggle about 5 ways holidays are never the same after having kids.
If you like a bit of social media madness, pop over to my Facebook page where you’ll be able to have a laugh at what ridiculousness goes on in my house with three very small boys on a daily basis.
