5 tips on transforming a garage into a family lounge space

People who live in crowded houses are transforming a garage into a family space more nowadays. Space that was once full of junk, boxes, and cars is now a functional lounge space. Garages can be converted into anything you like, from an extra bedroom to a new living room. Whether it’s hard to expand your house or property values are low, transforming your garage is a good idea. So, here are 5 tips to transform your garage into a family lounge space.

1. Plan Your Budget When Transforming A Garage

Even if you’re not remodeling your whole house, transforming a garage can still be an expensive project. If you want to create a simple living room, then the budget can be smaller, too. Also, don’t forget to include labor costs in the budget, which are around 10% to 20% of the final cost. Make a list of all the things that should be done, like new plumbing, interior walls, flooring, drywall, new windows, a ceiling, or insulation. Most likely, your garage is not insulated in the same way the rest of the house is. You can find all the tips and learn more about what type of insulation you need on insulation4less. If you’re handy, then you can do some work and save some money.

2. Car and Equipment Storage

Before you decide to transform your garage into a living space, figure out where you will keep your car, tools, and other equipment that is in the garage. One option could be parking your car in front of the house if it’s a safe neighborhood. Another option is to find a parking garage near you or ask your neighbors if they have extra space for your car. Regarding tools and equipment, you can place them on Overhead Garage Storage Racks in the basement or even build a small shed.

3. Is The Garage Big Enough for A Living Space?

Before you start renovating your home, one of the most important aspects of transforming your garage is the space. First, think about and measure how big your garage is and if the layout fits your needs. Make sure you exactly know what you want, what you don’t want, how you want to use the space, and what you wish to have. For example, that could mean space for a nice big TV or space for your favorite wall art. Also, consider what’s the best way to maximize the space, you can even consult with a professional. If the garage is relatively small, you can decide on pocket doors instead of swing doors, since they take up much more space.

4. Add New Light Sources When Transforming A Garage

Garages aren’t naturally filled with a lot of light. So, it’s important to consider adding natural light if you want to create a comfortable living space. Plan to add new windows, the more the better. Some municipalities even require at least one window in order to consider a garage to be a living space. The cost of adding new windows will depend on the size, type, and quality. Another thing to consider is adding more wiring and outlets since garages usually have a bare bulb light. You can decorate your new living space with warm lamps that will create a cozy atmosphere.

5. Treat Your Garage as An Equal Part of Your Home

In order to have a real and nice family lounge space, it’s best to invest in high-quality materials. Transforming a garage with cheap materials won’t make your new space look or feel good. Proper insulation is the key to making your garage-turned living room feel comfortable and warm. In addition, invest in quality windows that will add natural light and keep the warm air inside. Also, if you can afford it, invest in new flooring since it can add a nice finishing touch.

So, there you have it, 5 tips to transform your garage into a family lounge space. Enjoy the process of making your home nice for your family and look forward to a new space where you get to make memories with your whole family.
