As those hazy, sunny days kick into full scorchin’ mode, now’s the moment to rehab your bedroom into a delightfully chill oasis. And it all starts by upgrading your centrepiece bed situation to match those lofty lounge-all-day goals. Here are some tips on choosing the perfect bed.

Don’t get trapped in a cramped single bed try a small double bed and finally graduate to a generously sprawl-worthy bed. Cuddly couples would perhaps be fine with a 120cm double bed at a minimum or alternatively a lush 150cm king size bed which provides ample space for couples. A 180cm super king bed is the real living though ample sleeping surface, although you would need quite a large bedroom to accommodate it.
Under-bed stash spaces
Bet you didn’t realise that some sneaky beds double as capacious storage wizards, ideal for quickly stowing away your off-duty winter woollens.
Clever ottoman beds keep a hollow cavern concealed beneath the entire mattress platform via a hydraulic hinge system. Gently raise it into the air and shazam – a massive storage area for all your bits and bobs.
Even standard divan bases can pack a nifty punch with two to four drawers tastefully integrated into the upholstered base.
Upholstered beauties
For an ultra-cool contemporary vibe that still feels buttery soft, faux suede is the way to go this summer. There’s no sticky vinyl nonsense—the sleek faux suede texture drapes and moulds to your contours without getting clammy or trapping sweat. Bonus points if you find it in a fresh white or mineral tone for an extra breezy, minimalist aesthetic.
If swaddling yourself in cosy plushness is more your jam, prepare to go full-on teddy bear chic with a nubby boucle fabric base.
Despite being irresistibly fuzzy, the looped fibres allow airflow to prevent overheating. Just avoid darker tones, which will turn your divan into a solar oven.
Faux leather is another option, although the surface can get a bit sticky in summer – lightweight linen is usually better in warmer weather.
Metal and wooden bed charm
If upholstered divans aren’t quite your rustic-refined cup of tea, go classic with stately metal or wooden bed frames designed to last generations.
Breezy white woodgrain exudes cottage charm, while heavily distressed or driftwood-look beds beg for an overhead glamper canopy to complete that bourgeois bohemian ambience.
Not your vibe? Then wow with high-polished aged brass and coppers for an elegant vintage vibe. Opting for these sturdy metal craftsman beds with an heirloom-quality patina adds inimitable soul and character to your summer siesta.
Sinkable softness or firm support?
Your mattress is paramount for achieving pillowy decadence, and hybrid mattresses work next-level wonders. They combine supportive pocket springs with thick layers of contouring memory foam or cooling gel-infused foam up top.
You’ll float in sumptuous softness without that “stuck” feeling. They’re perfect for sinking into while sprawling out in any freestyle position.
If you favour more resilient, responsive support with just a smidge of cuddly give, the Goldilocks solution is medium-firm mattresses with pure foam or pocket springs.
Medium-firmness mattresses offer that sweet spot of sinkage and underlying bolstering for most sleep positions – especially side sleepers – although medium-firm ones are usually the better solution for side and back sleepers.
Some mattresses are also fantastic when the temperatures rise—winter/summer side mattresses have a flippable design, while memory gel mattresses like the Sleepeezee Jessica 1800 Pocket Gel help shift heat away from you.
Mattresses with a vented border are also worth their weight in gold to reduce heat build-up and keep you comfortable in the hottest weather. Check out this cool mattress guide for more ideas.
