Thanks to scholarships and bursaries, private schools aren’t just exclusive to those able to afford their fees. Children can be awarded partial or full financial support to fund their education and have access to a much higher standard of teaching. While similar, bursaries and scholarships differ on their criteria. Scholarships are achieved on academic merit, whereas bursaries are means tested on level of financial need.

How Much Is Awarded
This will depend on the school you’re applying to. While most independent schools will cover the entirety of your child’s tuition fees, others do so partially or offer vouchers to cover the cost of equipment. Before applying we’d recommend that you look into the finer details carefully so that you know how much you will likely need to pay and can assess whether the options you’ve chosen fit your budget.
Eligibility of Scholarships and Bursaries
This will again depend on the school that you’re looking at, but they are typically awarded to those that perform exceptionally well in specific subjects such as sports, arts or those that are academic.
How to Apply for Scholarships
You can usually apply for a scholarship online, if not however you may need to request for an application form. Alternatively, parents might be able to book an appointment and arrange to meet with a senior member of staff, such as a head teacher. This method gives you flexibility and your child the chance to show their dedication.
Information regarding fees, how much support is available and the criteria for obtaining one can usually be found on a school’s website. If financially your family will experience hardship sending your child to a private school, bursaries may be a better option to consider. Consult with the website and staff for more information.
